Cultural competence: leading diverse teams

Scroll down for 4 clips showing interactions between culturally different communication styles

1. Multicultural team meetings: drawing positively on cultural diversity in the workplace

Short description: A diverse team needs to be competently managed to work well - to avoid tensions and misunderstandings and to bring out the full benefits of group creativity. This clip introduces cultural competence with teams in multi-cultural Australia.

2. Culturally sensitive meetings: ways to improve multicultural group decision-making

Short description: A group of managers from different cultural backgrounds (including Greece, Italy, Malaysia, India and Anglo-Australia) have a decision to make. This clip introduces a remarkable experiment in which they test out different culturally competent meeting styles, and assess the benefits and effects on outcome of each in turn.

3. Japanese meeting style: cultural contrast to Western approaches

Short Description: At a genuine international joint project meeting between Western, Japanese and Indonesian managers in Semarang, we ask the Japanese how such a meeting would be held in Japan. They describe a very different meeting style. In international project or change management, who needs to adapt to whom, to gain most positive outcomes?

4. Problem-solving and trouble-shooting: East/West differences

Short Description: Western engineers are used to brainstorming the causes of problems. But when an alarm shows a failure of satellite transmission in Hanoi, Western engineers working alongside the Vietnamese telephone technicians see very different cultural behaviours both in reacting to, and handling, such an emergency.
